Voyo: Building Something That Made Beauty Feel Practical

For a long time, I thought beauty and practicality existed on opposite ends of a spectrum. Beauty felt emotional, idealistic, and difficult to justify. Practicality felt responsible, measurable, and grounded in reality. The world around me seemed to reinforce that idea too. We talk about “realistic” decisions and “dream” decisions as though they belong in different categories. Experiences are often weighed against cost, creativity against efficiency, and fulfillment against responsibility.
Over time, I started questioning whether that separation actually made sense. Why should meaningful experiences be treated like luxuries? Why should practical decisions feel disconnected from what we genuinely care about? And why did financial conversations so often begin with limitations instead of values?
Those questions stayed with me for a while, and when I began my internship and was given the freedom to create my own deliverable, I realized I wanted to dedicate that opportunity to exploring them. That project became Voyo.
Voyo stands for Vision, Outlook, Yield, Outcome, and I designed it around an idea that felt simple but important to me: practical decisions become more meaningful when we understand what they are serving. The purpose of Voyo was never to convince people to spend more or pursue every idea they have. I wanted it to help people think more intentionally about experiences they cared about and then figure out how to approach them realistically.
Most financial planning tools begin with numbers, voyo intentionally does not. Instead, it begins with questions: what do you want? Why does this matter to you? Where did this desire come from? When do you imagine this happening? What feeling are you actually looking for? I wanted users to sit with those questions before moving into budgets, savings plans, affordability, or timelines.
The “Vision” stage focuses on identifying the experience itself and understanding what gives it meaning. The “Outlook” stage explores expectations, priorities, and context. Only after those foundations are established does the conversation move toward “Yield” and “Outcome,” where practical planning starts to enter. That sequence mattered to me.
I think sometimes financial decisions become stressful because they start at the end instead of the beginning. We ask whether something is possible before asking whether it is meaningful. Of course, building that into a real system ended up being more complicated than the idea itself.
One of the parts I spent the most time on was creating the system prompt and refining how the experience actually felt to users. I quickly realized that if the questions felt robotic or generic, people stopped reflecting and started answering mechanically.
I wanted Voyo to adapt to people instead of forcing everyone through one conversation style.
That meant building different pathways depending on tone, response style, and pacing. Some users answered directly while others became reflective. Some wanted structure while others wanted space to think out loud. To support that, I created a large question bank and worked through many iterations of prompts and responses so the interaction felt more natural and aligned with different personalities and values.
A lot of the work ended up being less technical than I expected and more about understanding people.
The earliest testing happened with my family. That stage probably changed the project more than anything else. There were obvious technical refinements, but there were also bigger conceptual changes. Some questions felt too abrupt. Some sections moved too quickly into planning. Some responses sounded helpful in theory but did not actually feel supportive.
That testing process pushed me to rethink not just what Voyo asked, but when and how it asked it. Eventually, we expanded testing to friends and community members. The feedback that stayed with me most was not about the planning features.
People talked about the opening questions. Several people mentioned that they appreciated being asked things they had not thought about before. Why do I want this? When did I start wanting this? Is this really about the experience itself or something else I associate with it? I found that interesting because those questions were always the heart of the project. The budgeting and planning matter, but they were never meant to replace reflection. If anything, they were meant to support it.
Creating Voyo changed the way I think about decision-making. It made me realize that beauty and practicality are not opposites unless we design them to be. Practicality does not have to mean removing meaning. Beauty does not have to mean abandoning structure.
Sometimes the most sustainable decisions are the ones that make room for both. Voyo started as an internship project, but more than that, it became a way for me to explore an idea I had been carrying for a long time: that maybe our goals, experiences, and values deserve to be treated as things worth planning for, not things we only allow ourselves to consider after everything practical is finished.
