The Strange Feeling of the School Year Ending

The end of the school year always feels a little harder to describe than the beginning. There is a sense of relief, but also a quiet in-between feeling that is not quite excitement or sadness. It is more like awareness that a routine you have been living inside is about to disappear.

During the year, life tends to feel structured in a very specific way: days are divided by classes, assignments, schedules, and expectations that repeat often enough to become familiar. When that structure starts to loosen, even if it is welcomed, there is an adjustment period where time feels slightly less defined.

I’ve noticed that during the last weeks of school, people often shift into a different mindset without fully realizing it. Some start slowing down, some start planning ahead, and some are just waiting for it to be over (me!). None of those reactions feel entirely complete on their own.

What stands out most is how quickly a routine that once felt constant can disappear. It makes you realize how much of your daily life is shaped by structure rather than choice. Once that structure is gone, even temporarily, there is a strange awareness of time that is usually not there during the year.

Maybe that is part of what makes this transition feel so specific. It is not just the end of school, but the shift from one kind of time to another.
